Children and Teen Psychotherapy FAQs
How do I know if it's time to bring my child or teen to see a therapist?
Every child experiences up and downs as they face new situations, more academic and social demands, changes in the family structure and search for their own personal identity. Just as adults do, children respond differently to changes that life brings their way. Sometimes these changes in mood and behavior come and go, but other times children and teens may experience disruption in their daily functioning. This is when it is a good idea for children and teens to meet with a therapist – when the behavior can be worked with and positive changes can be made. Psychotherapy provides children a safe space to process the necessary emotions so that they can move forward and live happy, productive lives – and so they can enjoy being a kid again.
What is my first step if I think therapy might be beneficial for my child?
The best first step is usually for the parent and/or child to meet with me in person to see if there is a good fit. Feeling comfortable with your therapist lays the foundation for making positive changes in therapy. For this reason, I offer a 50 minute introduction session free of charge.
How often will we meet and how long will it take for my child or teen to feel better?
Everyone wants their child to feel better ASAP. But every situation is different. Some children feel better in a few sessions, but it often takes more time for the underlying issues causing the problem to be worked through. Just as when your child has a cold or flu, they need the time and space to let their bodies heal. Therapy usually works in the same way. I will be able to give you a better timeline after your free 50 minute introduction session and after completing a clinical assessment of your child.
Do you take insurance?
I do not accept insurance. However, many insurance policies will reimburse for out of network providers. I always provide invoices after sessions for you to be reimbursed by your insurance company. Please check with your insurance provider directly to understand your specific coverage.
What form of payment do you accept?
I accept cash, check and credit cards at the beginning of each session.
What if I need to cancel my appointment?
Cancellations happen. If you need to cancel your appointment, please do so more than 48 hours before your scheduled appointment. Appointments that are not cancelled on time will be charged the full fee.
